Myths of Counseling

Only "crazy" people go to therapy.

Many people experience mental health struggles throughout their lives, even though many would never acknowledge it. All of us experience overwhelming stressors from time to time. Those individuals who have the courage to do something to change and improve their situation, seek support.

I should be able to handle this by myself…

In today’s society, stress levels are at an all time high.  I believe we could all benefit from a little added support and a different perspective.  The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result- try something different.

All we will do is talk about my feelings.

Yes, feelings are important, however they are a small part of our reactions.  If you don’t like expressing your feelings, we can start with your thoughts and behaviors you’d like to improve.

I will have to share all the personal/ embarrassing details of my life.

You are in complete control as to what you share in your session.  As you develop trust with your therapist, your fear of sharing personal information will hopefully lessen.  If not, they may not be the right therapist for you.

 Medication works faster!

True, you may experience temporary relief from your current symptoms. However without gaining a better understanding of the source of these symptoms, the risk for them resurfacing is high. Instead of just treating the symptoms, therapy addresses the cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that stop you from meeting your life goals.

Once I start therapy, life will improve immediately.

Change takes time and is often experienced in waves. Sometimes things will get worse before they will get better. There is no magic wand and no calculated formula to recovery.  Setting short and long term behavioral goals will help you stay motivated.

“I am paying you to know how to change my life”.

It’s true, I do specialize in human behavior, however my philosophy on therapy is that we are a team.  I know behavior patterns, but you are the expert on your life.  Together we can make change.  Progress depends on your readiness to change and your ability to be honest with yourself.
